Next Steps at King's Church Chessington

Our Story

A century ago, Chessington was a small rural community. But in 1927, the Kingston-By-Pass and a new railway line transformed it into a growing commuter hub. Amidst this change, believers from Brook Road Mission (now Hook Evangelical Church) longed to plant an evangelical church in Chessington. Though World War II delayed their vision, God’s faithfulness prevailed.

In the late 1940s, a Sunday School began at Moor Lane School, later moving to a Civil Defence building. In September 1950, a handful of Christians gathered there for the first mission service in Chessington. God blessed their efforts, and in 1959, Chessington Evangelical Church (CEC) was officially founded, with a new church hall at Parbury Rise.

The congregation, trusting in God’s provision, sacrificially gave to expand the church in 1965, allowing more people to hear the gospel. Over the years, many came to Christ as His Word was faithfully preached. As the church grew, so did the need for space, leading to a move to Chessington Community College in 1991.

Then, in an incredible act of divine providence, the Local Authority unexpectedly offered the church two acres of land for community use. Gripped by faith, the congregation of 180 prayed and raised £2.5 million to build a multi-purpose Church Community Centre—The King’s Centre. On May 3, 1997, the vision became reality, with Sir Cliff Richard inaugurating the centre before 900 attendees, and Dick Lucas preaching on “The King’s Concerns”, reminding those that gathered that the priorities of The KING were to ever be our priority as His people.

Through decades of change, God’s hand has remained steadfast. Every milestone has been marked with a song of gratitude: "To God be the glory, great things He has done." King’s Church stands today as a testimony to His unwavering faithfulness.
